Department Profile

The Dept of History took
its genesis in 1970. Before that Prof.Janab, H.Amir Ali, the first H.O.D.,had been teaching political science as an allied
paper to Economics, right from 1957 to 1970.The Dept of History has had a long existence of 35 years. M.A.History was introduced
in the academic year 2002-03. Total number of students in B.A.,classes are 160 and 40 in the P.G. classes
in this academic year 2005-06. Even
at the U.G. level, the curriculum has been so designed as to serve the society and to prepare the students for their future
career. Journalism, public Admn and Tourism are the three papers worth mentioning at the U.G.level. The syllabus
has been designed for M.A. History to satisfy the needs of the aspirants of administrative services.
Human Rights, Tourism, Epigraphy and Administrative and political Institutions are some papers worth mentioning.
Seminars
The Dept has organized UGC sponsored seminars and other programmes in the past.

- Historical studies on Tamilnadu (2003)
- National Seminar on Tamilnadu in the last Millennium- UGC sponsored 18-19 February 2005.
- Tamilnadu History Congress XII Annual session, 30th sep-2nd oct 2005.
Projects:
The members of the staff of the Department are pursuing further
research. Dr. T. Jayaraman took up the study on the ‘Dikshitars of
Chidambaram in Socio-Cultural Perspective’ (1999) under Small Study
and Research Grant, Nehru Trust for the Indian Collection at the
Victoria Albert Museum, New Delhi. The project was completed and
submitted in 2006.
The Department has been assigning various problems and areas for
study to the U.G., and P.G. students. And so far 120 U.G Projects
and 42 P.G.Projects (2005- 06) have been done by the students of the
Department of History. In 2005 - 2006, in course of the field study
for a P.G. Projects, new Inscriptions were discovered by the staff
and students and deciphered with the help of the Department of the
Archaeology. Thus the Department has been contributing to history
with new findings and helps widen the horizon of historical
learning.
Computer
Facility:
The Department has been provided with Computer system Printer and OHP for facilitating the Research work and classroom teaching. It is useful for preparing the notes for the students, classroom handouts and reports.

- The influence of D.K movement at Mayiladuthurai.
- A general survey of the Socio-Economic condition of the small shop-keepers of Koranad

organizations
Rolling-shield was awarded to the department by the college
management for scoring the highest percentage of results in the
Under graduate (B.A.) course during the academic year 2003-04.
