| PEKAK Extension Programme

'PEKAK' is a campus diversity programme in which opportunities are provided to the young students to develop interest in service to the society. All the first year under graduate students irrespective of their participation in other programmes like NCC, NSS, etc., have to take up service activities, (e.g. arranging medical camps, developing clean environment awareness, campaign in adopted villages) under the guidance of teaching staff of the college and a village coordinator.
Participation of students in community service and Extension programmes was initiated by UGC and NAAC, and so it has been introduced from the academic year 2001-2002.
The I year UG men and women students are divided into 12 and 6 groups respectively and adopt 12 villages. Each group will be guided and supervised by a faculty member who will act as Extension Programme Co-ordinator.
The groups will act as liaison between the villages and pachayats / panchayat union in the implementation of rural development programmes for the upliftment of the adopted villages. Thus the students act as catalytic agents.
FIELD WORK:
Service minded village people will act as village Co-odinators and will introduce the students to the villagers and create a
rapport between the two. Each group will conduct a preliminary survey in the village adopted and gather data about population, education, health, basic amenities,
social and economic conditions. Collected data will be processed and analyzed. Thus areas of deficiency / inadequacy are identified and
remedial measures are planned. Eye, Dental camps and other medical camps will be conducted based on the findings. Sponsoring NGO's will
be contacted for assistance. Projects such as "Rainwater Harvesting", Veterinary camps, Social forestry, Training programme for cultivators
are carried out. Women students undertake propagation of Government schemes and programmes of women literacy, health, and formation of self-help groups.
DURATION:
Training etc., in the adopted villages is designed to cover 40 hours per year besides the preliminary programmes in the campus. One day village camps will be conducted in the respective villages with 10 hrs duration per day. Each group will make 6 visits of 3 hrs duration as a follow-up after the camp.
EVALUATION OF STUDENTS:
Each student is assessed on the
basis of a) attendance, b) involvement c) team work, and d) general
